Gonzalez Heads Fields in Charity Runs Sunday

Danny Gonzalez will head the men’s elite fields in the 10K and 5K runs Sunday in the fourth Hard Rock Cafe “Run for Cover” at Fashion Island in Newport Beach.

The event will feature men’s and women’s 10K races at 7:30 a.m. and 5K races at 8:30. There will also be a 1K Kids’ Fun Run at 9:40.

Gonzalez, from Rancho Santa Margarita, finished fourth in the half-marathon at the San Diego Marathon in January. He also competed in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays 10K in Walnut, finishing in a time of 29 minutes 20 seconds, and in the Occidental Invitational 5K in Los Angeles, finishing in 14:09.

Top local women runners in the 5K include Kelly Flathers of Newport Beach, Edwina Foley of Santa Ana and Anet Cooper-Meyer of Tustin.

Registration forms are available at the Newport Beach Hard Rock Cafe or on-line at HomeAid’s web site (https://www.homeaid.org). Fees are $21 for adults and $12 for children younger than 12. Registration Sunday is $23 for adults.

The event benefits HomeAid Orange County, the nonprofit organization established by the Building Industry Assn. that builds and renovates shelters for the transitionally homeless.

Registration fees will be waived for participants turning in $30 or more in pledges for HomeAid by race day. For more information, call (714) 491-4171.
