Victory Not Official, but Cabinet Named
With his electoral victory still not official, Nicaragua’s apparent president-elect, Arnoldo Aleman, has named almost his entire Cabinet despite simmering postelection tensions. Though election authorities have not announced the winner, preliminary results gave Aleman of the right-wing Liberal Alliance a 49%-38% lead over the left-wing Sandinista Front’s Daniel Ortega. Aleman called on the Sandinistas to concede defeat and end the uncertainty gripping the nation, but he also extended an olive branch, offering to work with them in the future.
