Chasing Butterflies

Share

John McKinney’s article on monarch butterflies (“Following the Flight of the Butterfly,” Sept. 22) inspired us to make a side trip to Pismo Beach as we headed north toward San Luis Obispo.

We had no problem following the directions to Pismo State Beach but were disappointed when we got there. As we were told by the park ranger (but not by the article), the state beach is for overnight camping only and there is no day-use parking.

Not to be deterred, we headed north, and, about a mile north of Grand Avenue, we did see the butterflies. The easiest viewing was simply to pull off the road on the grassy area (west side) across from a trailer park. It’s just south of another state park entrance (also camping only). The monarchs were happily flitting above trees and bushes there.

Editor’s Note: A Pismo State Beach employee said the area north of Grand Avenue is, indeed, the best viewing site. She says drivers should exit U.S. Highway 101 at Grand, turn left, go to Highway 1, turn right and look for a trailer with a butterfly sign about a mile up on the left.
