Immigration Bill

Re “That Was No Reform; It’s a Sellout of Our Border,” Commentary, Oct. 30: Ben Seeley should know that no single piece of legislation could fully address the difficult problems that we have with immigration. As author of the new illegal immigration law, my intent was to make significant reforms to our broken system and Congress has done that.

No one gets everything they want from Congress. But the American people did get legislation that secures America’s borders, reduces the flow of illegal drugs, protects American jobs and saves taxpayers billions of dollars.

Congress also set two historical precedents for legal immigration: Every immigrant must now have a sponsor who signs a legally binding agreement of support, and every sponsor must have an income that is above the poverty line.

Most people agree that the immigration reforms that were recently enacted could not have been passed just a few years ago. They constitute a meaningful foundation that reorients immigration to serve our national interests.
