Mondale to Retire as Envoy to Japan

<i> Associated Press</i>

Walter Mondale said today that he is retiring as U.S. ambassador to Japan, joining the exodus from the Clinton administration following the president’s reelection.

The ambassador notified Washington that he would like to finish out his duties by mid-December, the U.S. Embassy said in a statement.

Mondale served for 3 1/2 years. He said Friday that it was time to come home.

Mondale plans to return to practicing law in his home state of Minnesota.

He was vice president under President Carter and represented Minnesota in the Senate.
