Skeleton Is Found in La Salle’s Ship

Archeologists excavating the sunken ship of the French explorer La Salle found a 300-year-old human skeleton in the wreckage and think there may be many more. The skeleton was found last week in Matagorda Bay, 80 miles southwest of Houston, as archeologists worked to recover the remains of the Belle, the ship belonging to the explorer who traveled the Mississippi River and named the land around it Louisiana. Officials say the skeleton is not believed to be La Salle’s, who was murdered by members of his crew in Texas in 1687, a year after the Belle sank.
