Store Owner Fined in Child Support Case

The 53-year-old owner of a liquor store on Ventura Avenue pleaded guilty Friday to seven counts of contempt of court for not withholding child support payments from his employees, Dist. Atty. Michael D. Bradbury said.

As a result of the plea entered in Ventura County Superior Court, Raymond Leroy Ramirez of Ventura was sentenced to 35 days in jail and more than 800 hours of community service. But Commissioner Manual J. Covarrubias suspended the sentence provided that Ramirez, who was arrested Aug. 14 by district attorney investigators, completes a three-month probation, Bradbury said.

Ramirez was also ordered to pay a $2,000 penalty for failing to comply with a court order to withhold the support payments.

“There are very real consequences for employers who fail to comply with court orders to withhold and forward child support payments. When businesses ignore this obligation, children who depend upon child support payments for their existence suffer,” Bradbury said.
