Newt Gingrich

* For the past two years House Speaker Newt Gingrich has brought gridlock to Capitol Hill by building a bridge to the past. He has been responsible for slashing constructive liberal programs which would have benefited Medicare, Medicaid, education and the environment. Now Gingrich should send a positive message by not lobbying for a second term as speaker of the House.

A moderate House leader could bring the party toward the center from its extreme position under Gingrich. He could help restore the credibility of the GOP and could work with the centrist president to implement progressive legislation.
