GOP Senator Has No Interest in Old Probes of Clinton
As Republican leaders speak of questions and anxieties about President Clinton’s activities, the senator expected to head the main investigating panel said Sunday he has no desire to rehash old investigations.
“Obviously the campaign finance problems that came out in the last few months of the campaign [should be investigated],” Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) said Sunday on CBS-TV’s “Face the Nation.”
“Beyond that . . . I’m not interested, personally, in rehashing old material that’s already been around for some months, or going back into that and extending it for several months into the future.”
Thompson, scheduled to become chairman of the Senate Government Affairs Committee, said how long future investigations last depends on White House cooperation.
Clinton said he was hopeful Republicans would spend more time on issues and less investigating the White House.
In other comments from the Sunday talk shows, Rep. Steve Largent (R-Okla.) recommended that Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) give up his speaker’s seat until ethics charges are resolved.
