Panel to Study America’s Anger, Cynicism
A study of why Americans are “so cynical, so distressed, so angry, so ticked off about so many things” will begin next year, former Education Secretary William J. Bennett and retiring Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.) announced Wednesday.
Bennett and Nunn announced the formation of a 25-member National Commission on Civic Renewal. It will be underwritten by a $950,000 grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts.
The panel, including educators, foundation executives, clergy and business people, will conduct three Washington hearings to take testimony about the breakdown in civic trust.
William Galston, a University of Maryland professor who served as a domestic policy advisor to President Clinton, will be the commission’s executive director. John F. Cooke, executive vice president of Walt Disney Co., also will be on the commission.
