Loyola Blanks Anteaters in Men’s Soccer

After 72 minutes of scoreless play, Loyola Marymount forward Jorge Rodriguez got by a UC Irvine defender and scored from nine yards out to give the Lions a 1-0 nonconference men’s soccer victory Wednesday.

UC Irvine (7-7-5) rallied in the last 10 minutes, but the Anteaters were unable to score as two late shots hit the crossbar.

Goalkeeper Chris Walter had eight saves in his sixth shutout of the season for Loyola Marymount (6-11-2).

In the Rolex Southern California women’s tennis regionals:

Yim and Brown lose in second round--Liz Yim of UC Irvine was defeated by San Diego State’s Lisa Papi, 6-0, 6-3, in the second round of qualifying singles. Anteater teammate Alexis Brown lost to UNLV’s Jelena Kocergin, 6-1, 6-4.

UC Irvine’s Mai Nguyen, Fiona Jones, Brandy Chase, Kelly Foster, Patty Villaroman and Leah Fisher lost in the first round.

In qualifying doubles, Chase and Fisher advanced, defeating Long Beach State’s Aida Orejal and Veronica Selby, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
