Cleaning Procedure May Endanger Jets

Responding to reports that adhesive tape over sensor openings may have led to an airline disaster in Peru, federal safety investigators issued an urgent recommendation that U.S. carriers should use warning flags and brightly colored covers when they block such ports. Tape found covering sensor ports on the fuselage of a Boeing 757, a common practice during polishing, may have led to the Oct. 2 crash that killed all 70 people aboard.
