Housing Applications Sought From Seniors

Share

For the first time in two years the Housing Authority of the city of Los Angeles will accept applications for future placement in subsidized apartments for seniors and disabled persons.

Starting Tuesday, the Housing Authority will conduct preliminary interviews by phone to determine if prospective applicants are eligible for the program, said Dushyant Rajan, Housing Authority property manager for the San Fernando Valley.

Once eligibility is determined, applicants will be placed on a waiting list for one of seven apartment complexes owned by the Housing Authority. Three of the complexes are in the Valley--two in Reseda and one in Woodland Hills.

“We received a glut of applications in 1994 and we’ve finally made it to the bottom of that list,” said Rajan. “Residents don’t pay more than 30% of their adjusted monthly income for the apartments. For seniors and disabled folks on fixed incomes, this is really a boon.”

Rajan said the Housing Authority does not offer 24-hour care in the apartments but does provide help with shopping, transportation to medical appointments, organized outings and recreational activities.

“We call it independent assisted living,” he said. “It’s a very full program that allows for our clients’ needs to be taken care of.”

To apply, call toll free at (888) 500-3700, Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., beginning Tuesday. TDD users may call (818) 756-1072.
