Fisher’s Time Gets Cut Down

Share

The improved play of Nick Van Exel--16.2 points and 11.5 assists in the six games before Friday--has meant a decreased role for backup point guard Derek Fisher, the first-round pick who had played well at the outset.

Heading into the game against the Spurs, Fisher had three turnovers and no assists the three previous outings, 25 minutes in all. He’s shooting 33.3% for the season.

“Nick’s been playing so well,” Coach Del Harris said. “Derek’s done a good job holding down the fort. It’s hard to put together significant stats five minutes at a time. We’ve needed him to go in, play, not make any mistakes. And he’s done that.”

The game against the Spurs was the Lakers’ second sellout in six home games. . . . The Lakers’ usual starters--Shaquille O’Neal, Elden Campbell, Cedric Ceballos, Eddie Jones and Van Exel--are all on the all-star ballot. The game is Feb. 9 at Cleveland.
