Poll Workers
* A letter writer (Nov. 13) understated the hours for precinct officers. We were there for the 13 hours of voting, having started work an hour earlier. After closing we had other vital duties that ended, for me and for Mary Hitchcock, at 9:59 p.m. when we delivered the ballots to a collection point. She also attended the indoctrination-refresher lecture that was mandatory for me.
Fellow precinct officers Dianna Pungerchar and Bob Black worked almost the entire 16 hours. James Armstrong provided his garage for our polling place (and coffee).
By prearrangement, a troop of Cub Scouts were poll watchers. A political science student earned college credits by telling voters as they exited that their votes counted.
Sixteen hours is a long day, but all four of us signed up to serve again. All of us, including the voters of our precinct, appreciate the privileges of a free election.
