Tornado Kills 3, Damages Buildings
A tornado hit the northern town of Simsboro, killing two people when a large tree fell on their truck. A man sitting between the two struck men survived, a resident said. A utility lineman was electrocuted while restoring power to the town of Farmerville, about 28 miles to the northeast. The Simsboro tornado also ripped the roof off the high school gymnasium, damaged a glass-jar plant, toppled tractor-trailers on nearby Interstate 20 and knocked down trees and power lines in the town of about 900. “We’ve got no lights, no water,” said Mayor Opal Choate. The twister struck as a dangerous weather front moved eastward across the South, spawning several other tornadoes that caused major property damage. At least nine were injured across the region.
