From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A tornado hit the northern town of Simsboro, killing two people when a large tree fell on their truck. A man sitting between the two struck men survived, a resident said. The tornado also ripped the roof off the high school gymnasium, damaged a glass-jar plant, toppled tractor-trailers on nearby Interstate 20 and knocked down trees and power lines in this village of about 900. “We’ve got no lights, no water,” said Mayor Opal Choate. The two men killed were sitting in the front seat of a parked truck with another man when it was hit by the tree, according to resident Bill Barnes, who helped rescuers. He said the man in the middle was seriously injured. Barnes said it was “almost white” outside the window of his second-floor apartment before the tornado.
