Program Monitors Pollution Sources

State Coastal Conservancy board members are providing $118,000 to fund a program that sends volunteers into the Malibu Creek watershed to identify sources of pollution.

The two-year program, organized by Heal the Bay, trains volunteers and is developing a watershed monitoring kit, said Julia McIver, a conservancy spokeswoman. Printed material about the creek’s pollution will be produced.

“We are trying to foster stewardship among the people who live there,” McIver said.

Toni Pogue, a Heal the Bay spokeswoman, said that because the watershed is so large, volunteers are necessary to track how it is being polluted.

“We don’t know what’s out there,” Pogue said. “Before we can try to improve the watershed we have to get the basic data.”
