City May Move to Buy Mobile Home Park

Share

City Manager George Tindall will likely gain authority next week to purchase homes in the Oasis Mobilehome Park, officials said, the first step in the city’s controversial effort to replace the park with a 14-acre entertainment center.

City representatives have been negotiating with owners of coaches at the park. The City Council, acting as the redevelopment agency, will vote Tuesday on whether to proceed with the project. Community Development Manager Matt Fertal said the aim is to streamline the acquisition process so that individual agreements with the park’s 120 homeowners will not have to be voted on by the council.

The coaches range in value from $15,000 to $30,000.

Oasis residents have protested the acquisition, saying that the facility is one of only a handful of seniors-only parks in the central part of the county. They also have expressed concern that relocation payments by the city will be less than the actual costs of moving.

Park operator Pat Solman, whose parents hold the lease on the park, has complained that the city has destroyed her business and her parents’ livelihood by buying out the tenants.

Fertal said Solman has not approached the city directly about her concerns. “We’d love to sit down and talk to her about these,” he said, but “she’s not receptive to us.”

The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Center, 11300 Stanford Ave. Information: (714) 741-5100.
