How to Keep Tabs on Your Benefits

Share

The Social Security Administration recommends that American workers check their personal retirement accounts at least every two years to ensure that their earnings are being correctly posted.

The agency has $234 billion in wage reports--used to compute Social Security benefits--that it has been unable to match to wage earners since the program began in 1937.

You can call 1-800-772-1213 and ask for a personal earnings and benefits estimate statement or simply a statement of earnings. The agency will mail an application form that must be sent back for a statement, which will include a complete history of wages earned during your working life.

A statement can be requested and filled out electronically by visiting the agency’s Web site at https:www.ssa.gov. You can also make requests at your local Social Security office.

In 1995, the agency began sending earnings statements routinely to every worker who turned 60. In 1999, the agency will begin sending out statements to all workers every two years.
