Discussion of Program for Gifted
After three months of study, Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s Board of Education will hear recommendations tonight for improving its program for gifted students.
The committee of parents and teachers that studied the gifted and talented education program, or GATE, recommends that each school be given the choice of staying with the program or designing a program of its own.
The committee also suggests that the district make the program more accessible to more students by holding it at the four high schools.
Students in the program meet twice a month for several hours in the afternoon at Harbor View Elementary School in Newport Beach.
Some parents said that they wanted their children to spend more time doing advanced work.
Trustee Judith A. Franco said the recommendations are the first step toward improving the program’s curriculum.
The board meets tonight at 6 at Harper Community Center, 425 E. 18th St., Costa Mesa.
