Further Study of Ward Valley Dump

* Re “Burying Truth in Ward Valley,” editorial, Nov. 26:

I continue to be amazed at the extremes to which The Times will go in its efforts to support those who oppose the proposed Ward Valley low-level radioactive waste disposal facility. After more than 15 years of study, thousands of pages of documents, countless hours of testimony in scientific hearings and in courtrooms, reviews by the California Department of Health Services, League of Women Voters, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and by a blue-ribbon committee of the National Academy of Sciences, The Times still supports more studies. This position is tantamount to that of a patient who goes from one physician to another seeking a desired diagnosis.

In opposing Ward Valley, The Times has chosen to support the tactics of fear, alarmism and Luddite anti-science typical of the anti-nuclear movement. These tactics play on the public’s fear and ignorance about low-level radioactive waste and are designed to achieve political goals by distorting the significance of the report on Ward Valley issued by the NAS.

The Times’ readership deserves better.
