Piranhas Get Former Oiler Quarterback

The Piranhas of the Arena Football League signed quarterback Lee Williamson, who spent three seasons with the Houston Oilers.

Ian Welsh, Piranha director of football operations, said Tuesday that Williamson immediately becomes the front-runner for the starting quarterback job.

“Coming in, it’ll be his job to lose,” Welsh said. “That’s how [Coach] Mike Hohensee’s viewing it now.”

Williamson, who played college football at Presbyterian College, never threw a pass for Houston but was on the Oiler roster from 1993 to 1995. After the Oilers chose not to re-sign Williamson for 1996, he spent the year out of football.

Welsh said he decided to sign Williamson, a 6-foot-4 left-hander, after an impressive workout last week.

“He was just tremendous,” Welsh said. “He’s got an accurate arm and he can throw the deep ones. His balance and footwork was good. He’s really quick for a guy that tall. He definitely has NFL talent and he might be back in there after working with Mike [Hohensee] for a year.”

Welsh said he plans to sign two more quarterbacks to compete with Williamson and last year’s starter, Scooter Molander.
