Landlords Given Right to Evict Tenants Tied to Drug Crimes

Share

Landlords will be able to evict tenants who engage in illegal drug activity or gang-related crime on or within 1,000 feet of the property, or who have been convicted of a drug- or gang-connected crime on the property, according to a law passed Wednesday by the Los Angeles City Council.

If landlords do not evict such nuisance tenants, the city attorney’s office will be able to take action to oust the tenants and impose fines of up to $5,000 on the landlords.

Lawmakers said they had taken care to ensure that tenants could not be removed based solely on their neighbors’ accusations that they had caused problems. Rather, landlords can only evict people if they have been convicted or there is proof they have committed the crimes on the property.
