78 Killed in Tamil Attack on Police Post

Tamil Tiger rebels overran a police camp in eastern Sri Lanka, killing at least 38 government troops and wounding 39 in the deadliest attack since October, military officials said. Forty guerrillas were killed or wounded in the fighting early Tuesday, according to rebel radio broadcasts monitored by officials. The rebels seek a separate homeland for Tamils, an ethnic group that makes up about 18% of Sri Lanka’s population.
