David O’Keefe, an Orange police officer who lives in Villa Park, has been praised by the City Council for saving the life of an 8-month-old baby.
O’Keefe performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the sick child to restore his breathing.
Councilman Joseph S. Barsa told O’Keefe that Villa Park is proud of “the tremendous effort you did in saving that baby.”
In addition to the city’s official commendation, the council and a large audience of residents gave the officer a hearty round of applause.
O’Keefe’s heroic action took place in Orange on Oct. 16. O’Keefe was called to an apartment where the baby had stopped breathing. The mother told the officer that the child had recently been sick.
O’Keefe began administering CPR, and the baby responded, breathing normally again, Barsa said.
In congratulating the officer, Mayor Barry L. Denes noted that O’Keefe has been a longtime Villa Park resident.
“This is the first of many times he’ll make us proud,” Denes said.
