From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Richard Jewell, the former security guard cleared as a suspect in the Atlanta Olympic park bombing, has been placed on probation by a state agency that certifies law enforcement officers. The sanction, for impersonating a police officer on his request for certification as an officer, would not prevent Jewell from being hired as a police officer in Georgia, or affect his certification as a potential officer, the agency’s director said. Meanwhile, an FBI hotline set up to appeal for public help in the bombing investigation received more than 2,000 calls in its first five days. The July 27 blast killed one woman and wounded at least 100 people.
