District Office Moving to Make Way for School

Vans will load up Friday to move the headquarters of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District to a new office at 1230 Rosecrans Ave.

“It’s a big expedition to say the least,” school Supt. Gerald Davis said, noting that the headquarters has been located in the same building next to Polliwog Park for 10 years.

The building will be torn down to make way for a new middle school. Construction should start in March and the school will open in September 1998.

The school board last week approved the final environmental impact report on the school’s construction. It now goes to the city Planning Commission on Jan. 8 for approval before returning to the school board for final approval.

The 1,200-student middle school initially was opposed by the La Marina Neighborhood Assn., a group of 40 neighbors who were afraid it would cause traffic jams on Redondo Avenue and generate too much noise.

The school district has decided to locate the middle school 240 to 270 feet south of its original location and put the basketball courts and other hard courts away from residents’ backyards.
