Simple Tips to Help Prevent Holiday Fires

A Christmas tree, a lighted fireplace and burning candles may usher in the holiday spirit, but they can also create potential fire hazards.

The American Red Cross urges Ventura residents this holiday to prevent home fires by taking the following precautions:

* Keep trees and other greenery away from all heat sources.

* Provide water for Christmas trees.

* Check decorative lights for frayed wires.

* Never leave candles or fireplaces burning unattended.

* Keep flammable items such as paper and decorations away from heat.

In addition to preparing an escape route, the American Red Cross also reminds residents to check--at least twice a year--whether smoke detectors are working.
