Israeli President Ezer Weizman said Friday that he takes a negative view of “the phenomenon” of homosexuality and drew laughter from high school students by using a mincing, high-pitched voice to punctuate his attack.

Weizman, 72, a former general with a reputation for shooting from the lip, took aim at homosexuals during a speech to students in the northern city of Haifa.

Homosexuality “is abnormal from a social point of view. I don’t like it,” he said in broadcast remarks.

A major Israeli gay activists group, the Individual Rights Organization, called for Weizman’s resignation.
