From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Eighty-eight percent of adults believe it is important to put a child in the back seat if their car has dual air bags, suggesting the public has gotten the message that air bags can kill children, according to an Associated Press poll. Only 10% said it was not important to put a child age 12 or under in the back seat all the time. Seven in 10 said they wanted an air bag in their car. This year auto makers, the government and insurance and safety groups have waged a campaign stressing that children 12 and under should sit in back seats, since air bags have been blamed for the deaths of at least 32 children in low-speed accidents they otherwise would have survived.
