NAFTA Will Prove Harmful to the U.S.

Share

Within the next few years NAFTA will prove to be the worst possible trade agreement that the U.S. government has ever negotiated (“That Humming Sound,” Dec. 1).

It will become increasingly clear that the U.S. government policy is to break the back of labor unions in this country and force them to compete with Mexican wage rates. NAFTA, combined with the U.S. taxpayer bailout of the Mexican industrialist families that control Mexico, will result in increased unemployment and decreased factory wages in the United States.

Shamefully, our government has used our tax dollars to create a pool of cheap foreign labor for foreign industrialists. The rush of foreign companies to locate in Mexico is not designed to help the Mexican worker, but rather to exploit their willingness to work for minimal wages while providing maximum profit to the corporations that exploit them and reduce wages of workers worldwide.
