From Times Wire Reports

Romanians marked the seventh anniversary of the revolt that ended communist rule, with many calling on the newly elected authorities to explain why more than 1,000 people were killed. Hundreds of people braved icy rain in a Bucharest cemetery to lay wreaths, light candles and pray for those killed during the revolt in December 1989. More than 500 people were shot dead in Bucharest by forces loyal to dictator Nicolae Ceausescu; the upheaval claimed more than 1,000 lives nationwide. Ceausescu and his wife were executed days later.
