The Internal Revenue Service has proposed a tax exemption for certain merger-related warrants, which grant the owner the right to purchase stock when the warrants are exchanged as part of certain tax-free corporate reorganizations. Under some mergers and acquisitions, companies involved exchange stock, instead of cash, thereby avoiding federal taxes. Under the IRS proposal, the companies could now exchange warrants tax-free as well. . . . Britain’s B.A.T. Industries has been dismissed as a defendant from a tobacco lawsuit in Missouri, on grounds that it doesn’t produce or sell tobacco products, though its tobacco unit, Brown & Williamson, remains a defendant. . . . The dealers and casino workers at Tropicana Casino & Resort in Atlantic City, N.J., have voted to become the first unionized gaming staff in the United States, the Teamsters said.
