A Moorpark man was arrested Tuesday morning on charges of filing a false police report after he told deputies that he was the victim of a carjacking, then confessed that he had actually driven through a fence.

According to Sgt. Bob Sparks, a detective with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, Joey Alafa, 20, initially told detectives that he was leaving his place of work, Solano Verde Ranch in Camarillo, about 7:30 a.m. when he was pulled from his truck at knifepoint by three men.

He said he escaped and ran to a nearby business, then called a friend, who picked him up. He called police at 9:30 a.m.

Sparks said that Alafa took detectives to the scene, where the truck was found near the damaged fence.

He said that’s when Alafa admitted he had not been carjacked.

Sparks said that Alafa is an unlicensed driver and was “afraid that he was going to be made to pay for the damages caused by breaking through the fence.”

Alafa, who suffered some cuts and scratches, said the crash occurred because the brakes failed.
