Bruins Score Upset; Trojans Also Win

Freshman forward Maylana Martin scored 23 points and the UCLA women’s basketball team upset No. 9-ranked Western Kentucky, 73-61, in the second game of the Pac-10/Sun Belt Challenge at the Sports Arena.

Western Kentucky (6-2) trailed through most of the game and all of the second half but got within six at 65-59 with 6:10 to play. But the Toppers got no closer.

For UCLA (5-3), all five starters scored in double figures.

Martin made only five of 12 shots from the field but was 13 for 16 from the foul line. She also grabbed nine rebounds.

Freshman center Carly Funicello contributed 14 points and had seven rebounds. Leslie Johnson led Western Kentucky with 12 points.

UCLA made only 39.6% of its shots (19 of 48), but Western Kentucky made only 34.4% (21 of 61). UCLA outrebounded Western Kentucky, 37-32.

In the final day of the two-day competition, UCLA today faces New Orleans at 1 p.m.

USC 97, New Orleans 73--Tina Thompson had 30 points and seven rebounds to lead the Trojans in the first game of the Pac-10/Sun Belt Challenge.

USC (6-2) took control early, running up a 32-22 lead midway through the first half. The lead was 42-24 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the half and 48-34 at halftime.

Jenny Anderson, who made three of five three-point shots, scored 21 to lead New Orleans. The Privateers made 11 of 26 three-point shots.

USC sophomore guard Kristin Clark scored 19 points and Michelle Campbell had 16.

USC plays Western Kentucky today at 3:30 p.m. in a game to be televised by Fox Sports West.
