Republican Gov. Pete Wilson announced Monday that he has appointed a former Central Valley GOP assemblyman who was defeated in a congressional race to a $101,000-a-year position on a state board.

Trice Harvey, who ran for Congress after term limits forced him out of the Assembly this year, was named to the Agricultural Labor Relations Board, Wilson’s office announced. The appointment is subject to state Senate confirmation.

Harvey ran unsuccessfully Nov. 5 as the Republican nominee attempting to unseat three-term Democratic Rep. Calvin Dooley of Visalia.

Although voters in and around the Central Valley district have increasingly favored Republican candidates, Harvey had difficulties to overcome, including a sexual harassment charge by a former staffer--settled with a $10,000 payment from Assembly funds--and his wavering from GOP ranks in the 1995 fight over the Assembly speakership.
