Rescuers Evacuate 148 From Tunnel

Rescuers using helicopters evacuated 148 people from a tunnel in the Caucasus Mountains where they had been trapped for almost a week by avalanches, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said. A ministry spokesman said about 60 people, mainly drivers, had opted to remain rather than abandon vehicles in or near the 2 1/2-mile-long Roksky tunnel, which links Russia’s North Ossetia region and the Georgian province of South Ossetia.
