Virginia S. Zierer; Former Middle School Dean

Virginia Spencer Zierer, a former dean of girls at DeAnza Middle School in Ventura, died Thursday following a lengthy illness. She was 79.
Zierer was born Feb. 24, 1917, in Santa Ana, and lived in Ventura County since 1949.
She was with the Ventura School District for 22 years.
From 1954 to 1976 she was dean of girls at the middle school located on the north end of Ventura Avenue, and she taught math, English and American history.
She belonged to several organizations, including the sororities I-DA-KA and Sigma Kappa, the San Buenaventura Women’s Club, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile.
In her spare time, Zierer enjoyed sewing, reading and playing cards. She and her husband, Martin, enjoyed taking trips in their motor home, and she took several cruises with her daughter, Linda Giles of Ventura.
In addition to her husband and daughter, Zierer is survived by a brother, John Vernon Spencer of Oregon, and numerous cousins.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura.
Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale.
