A police officer exchanged fire with a gunman Friday night who apparently had just shot a man sitting in a parked car.

The incident occurred at 9:45 p.m. when an officer on patrol saw seven people approach a parked car at 3310 E. Chapman Ave. next to a Carl’s Jr. restaurant, with a male and female sitting inside, Police Lt. Tunstall said. The officer then heard a shot or shots and found the male passenger in the car had been shot in the stomach, Tunstall said.

The officer chased the group of seven, which scattered. The officer followed the gunman, who turned and fired, Tunstall said. The officer fired back, hitting him in the shoulder. The officer was not hit.
