Project May Reach Beyond Local Area

Ventura County could have a say in the proposed Newhall Ranch development if its review of deeds and land surveys is correct, a county memo says.

According to a memo by a county committee released Thursday, a review of deeds and surveys filed by the developers indicates some of the property for the proposed development may extend into Ventura County.

In that case, the memo says, Ventura County may have the authority to grant permits to subdivide some of the property for the proposed Newhall Ranch.

Both the developer, Newhall Land & Farming Co., and Los Angeles County officials say the proposed development would not encroach on Ventura County land.

Since learning of the proposed subdivision, many Ventura County residents and local environmentalists have been critical of plans to build Newhall Ranch, saying it would increase pollution and open the door to further development on the Ventura County side of the Santa Clara River Valley.

Upon completion, developers envision the city-sized community having 12,000 homes, seven schools and more than 30 miles of new roads.

If the lots do cross into Ventura County, Newhall Ranch will be required to apply for a permit to subdivide the parcels in the county.

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to review and discuss the matter at its meeting Tuesday.
