The parents of one of the two remaining female Citadel cadets said Friday that their daughter has never complained of being mistreated and they have no worries about her safety.

“My concern was that she would receive no more and no less treatment than the male [freshmen cadets] get,” said Nancy Mace’s father, retired Brig. Gen. Emory Mace. “And to this day, that is exactly what she got.”

Mace, a Citadel graduate, and his wife, Anne, spoke at the military college to reporters after their daughter received a gold star for academic achievement. Their daughter has refused most interviews.

“Her mission is to be seen and not heard,” Mace said.

Two other female cadets did not return this semester, alleging that they were harassed and hazed by male cadets. Ten cadets face disciplinary action; one other has resigned from the school.

The state-supported school dropped its all-male admissions policy in June and enrolled four women.

Anne Mace would not comment on what her daughter thought of the women’s allegations.

“My mother used to say there are three sides to every story--your side, my side and the reality somewhere in between. Perhaps you have a dose of that here,” she said.
