Recruiting Police Officers
* On Jan. 20, an article titled “More Horsepower; LAPD Seeks Mounts for Equestrian Unit but Few Meet Qualifications” contained demeaning comments regarding the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department. You alluded to the department’s hiring standards of human recruits as being “greatly relaxed” compared to the hiring of the “hoofed variety.” In fiscal year 1995-96, the city of Los Angeles tested 15,229 candidates for the position of police officer. Only 1,257 were actually hired, which equates to 8.2%.
The Los Angeles Police Department has always maintained the highest standards for selecting police officers. A candidate applying for a position with the department is subjected to a rigorous seven-step selection process that takes a minimum of six months to complete.
