Times Staff and Wire Reports

Workers at General Motors Corp.’s Moraine, Ohio, truck plant overwhelmingly approved a new local labor contract Saturday, a week after they rejected a previous offer and went on strike, union officials said. Local 801’s 4,100 members struck the plant near Dayton, Ohio, last Sunday, after workers rejected a proposed contract that included stiff penalties for absences. The walkout halted production of Chevrolet Blazer, GMC Jimmy and Oldsmobile Bravada sport-utility vehicles for two full days, costing GM about 2,000 vehicles. In the new pact, GM agreed to hire about 64 new workers, pay a $1,000 signing bonus, pay a total of $300,000 in penalties to settle grievances and grant higher shift premium pay to the plant’s third work crew.
