Police Department Technology
“LAPD Needs a Hand in Upgrading Technology” (editorial, Jan. 29) contains some accurate descriptions of LAPD problems. Having been a loyal employee for 24 years, I would like to add that the city for the most part has not supported the Police Department’s needs with adequate budgets for those 24 years.
This led what leaders we had, and well-intentioned personnel, to try to make systems or bootleg equipment in order to have something instead of nothing. When you’re strapped for personnel, equipment and funding, you can do nothing or attempt to continue functioning with what you have.
The present mayor has brought a professional approach to fixing the department and has appointed a commission that is not in bed with the ACLU. LAPD has problems that were created by at least 10 years of neglect and abuse by the City Council and past mayor.
