City Councilman Bob Zemel has been honored as Local Elected Official of the Year by the Republican Party of Orange County.

Zemel was chosen based on his service to Anaheim and the Republican Party.

“Bob’s decisive, conservative leadership has made him a leader not only in his own city of Anaheim but for Republicans all around the county,” state Sen. John R. Lewis (R-Orange) said at the award ceremony.

Zemel, elected to the council in 1994, has pushed to improve public safety in Anaheim and helped implement a plan that placed Immigration and Naturalization Service agents at Anaheim City Jail in an effort to reduce crimes committed by illegal immigrants. His work resulted in national legislation to staff INS officers at the jail, officials said.
