Welfare Reform, Immigrant Benefits

Share

Re “Study Tracks Pay That Women Need to Escape Welfare,” Jan. 28: What is wrong with this picture? First, the mothers could achieve self-sufficiency if the fathers were providing support.

Secondly, another way of achieving this is to eliminate most of the costs of child care by teaming up with a partner (a.k.a. husband, parent or housemate) and working opposite shifts and caring for each other’s children. This is how we did it when our children were young and this is how a lot of couples still do it today.

Instead, the “government” is supposed to provide the answers and wherewithal--baloney. I totally support Gov. Pete Wilson’s plan. People need to take responsibility for themselves by working, and then when their children are in school, they can pursue additional education and training. It can be done, it has been done and indeed is being done today--all without government assistance.

Re “Immigrants Warned of Impending Aid Cuts,” Feb. 1:

Your slant in the story on the stoppage of welfare to undocumented and illegal immigrants is out of line! Where are the sponsors of these individuals? They should be supporting them. The law says any legal immigrant must have a sponsor to provide for them in case of need, not the government.

How did the mentally handicapped person get in? The U.S. does not accept legal immigrants with mental problems.
