Pier Frequenters Mark Fisherman’s Death

Share

People placed flowers and photographs at Newport Pier on Monday in memory of Isadore Greenbaum, who died Sunday.

Known to regulars as “Pops,” Greenbaum, 84, was a fixture at the pier.

For nearly four decades, he traveled each day from his home in Tustin to fish in Newport Beach. The southeast corner of the pier, his favorite spot for casting his line, came to be known as “Pops’ Corner.”

Along with his bait and tackle, Greenbaum decorated his corner every day with an American flag and photos of himself with people he met on the pier.

Greenbaum is survived by his wife, Gertrude; three children; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Granddaughter Jessica Silva said Greenbaum had been hospitalized after suffering a broken hip and a heart attack.

Silva said Greenbaum visited the pier daily because he liked to fish and enjoyed chatting with other visitors to the pier. “He never got tired of it,” she said. “He just loved the people.”

A memorial service for Greenbaum will be held at 1 p.m. today at Pacific View Memorial Park, Newport Beach.
