A Long Beach police officer who died in October when his car crashed into a freeway signpost during a high-speed chase was “traveling at excessive speed” even for a pursuit, wasn’t using his siren or emergency lights and was not wearing a seat belt, the California Highway Patrol has found.

The report on the CHP investigation into the Oct. 13 death of Officer Karl Simons was released Monday by the city of Long Beach.

Simons, 26, was killed when he lost control of his car on the Long Beach Freeway and struck the sign pole after responding to a call regarding a stolen vehicle. Thousands of law enforcement officers attended Simons’ funeral services in Fullerton, his hometown.
