Joanne R. Euster, head librarian at UC Irvine, said she will retire effective Sept. 1.

Euster, who joined the university in 1992, has been responsible for development of several library facilities on campus.

She played a major role in opening the Science Library in 1994; renovating the Medical Center Library in 1995; and seismic retrofitting and renovating the Main Library, which reopened in January after six months of construction.

Administrators also give Euster credit for bringing UCI’s library system into the electronic age. She added 28 computer stations in the library for computer training and a communications room where students have e-mail access.

“Through Joanne’s outstanding leadership, UCI’s libraries have made tremendous advances that will benefit students and faculty for years to come,” said Sidney Golub, UC Irvine’s executive vice chancellor. “She has played an integral role in UCI’S growth as a leading research university.”

Administrators will begin a search for her successor this spring.
